Technology is changing more rapidly than ever. Here, we aim to demystify the most pressing topics that affect the government and the Americans they represent.
The Meridian Tech Labs is proud to be the landmark nonpartisan technology training program for all of government. We offer a pragmatic approach to technology to help government staffers shape more informed policy, allowing government staff to get face-to-face with leading experts to find the answers to pressing technology topics today.
We offer forward-thinking knowledge to get staff ahead of the curve, so you can beat the wisdom of the crowd.
Since 2016, the core component of the Tech Labs is a multi-week series of interactive classes run by world-renowned experts, from research to industry, that help government employees learn more about the evolving world of technology. In this series, we distill the most pressing tech topics that matter to policy makers: from how tech works to how it intersects with real-world policy tradeoffs.
After completing the Labs, participants join the 1,500 alumni of the Tech Labs in continued learning opportunities, such as our Masterclasses that offer deeper dives into cutting-edge tech policy issues. These touchpoints offer our alumni unique opportunities to stay smart on policy and remain prepared for the unknowns of tomorrow’s technologies.
The AI Lab introduces foundational artificial intelligence and machine learning concepts to policymakers. Participants explore core AI principles, applications in governance and national security, and international perspectives, including AI development in China. Sessions combine expert-led lectures, interactive exercises, tabletop simulations, and real-world case studies, providing a practical understanding of AI and its policy implications.
The Advanced AI Lab builds on the foundation of the AI Lab for participants seeking deeper technical knowledge. The program examines frontier AI development, safety and security considerations, open-source models, synthetic content, and scientific discovery. Participants engage directly with AI models, testing them on real-world scenarios to strengthen their understanding of complex topics and policy relevance.
The Cybersecurity Lab develops participants’ knowledge of core cybersecurity principles and systems. Topics include threat actors and tactics, cybercrime prevention, the private sector’s role in defense, and response strategies. Hands-on workshops allow participants to apply what they learn in realistic scenarios, bridging theory and practice.
This new offering is a pilot program designed to equip diplomatic staff with a practical, grounded understanding of artificial intelligence and AI safety. Taking place over a condensed two days, the Lab will translate complex technical concepts into policy-relevant insight for diplomats whose work increasingly intersects with AI governance and global norms-setting. The special cohort will preserve the core strengths of Tech Labs—expert-led instruction, candid discussion, hands-on learning, and cohort-building—all held at Meridian.
Currently, with the exception of the Diplomatic AI Lab, the Tech Labs are only open to U.S. government staff. However, as we seek to expand these opportunities, you are welcome to join our waitlist of non-USG staff by emailing techlabs@meridian.org with your name, job title and affiliation.
