Meridian International Center Names Dr. Zahi Hawass and Reem Acra 2026 Culturefix Honorees

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C. —  Meridian International Center will honor renowned archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass and internationally celebrated fashion designer Reem Acra as the first announced 2026 Meridian Cultural Diplomacy Awardees at its annual Culturefix on June 4, 2026. Additional honorees will be revealed in the months ahead.

Taking place in Washington, D.C., Culturefix has emerged as one of the capital’s most globally minded cultural gatherings — convening ambassadors, artists, philanthropists, policymakers, and creative leaders for an evening that blends the arts with international purpose. As the nation’s capital continues to rise as a hub of cultural influence, Meridian is expanding its role as a leading convener of global arts, sports, culture and diplomacy.

The Meridian Cultural Diplomacy Award recognizes individuals whose work demonstrates the enduring power of culture to shape global understanding and strengthen ties across borders.

Dr. Hawass, former Egyptian Minister of Antiquities, is among the most recognized archaeologists in the world. Over decades, he has led landmark excavations and championed the preservation of Egypt’s ancient heritage, elevating global appreciation for one of the world’s great civilizations. His advocacy for cultural heritage protection has positioned history not merely as scholarship, but as a cornerstone of national identity and international dialogue.

Reem Acra has built a global luxury fashion house synonymous with craftsmanship and cross-cultural elegance. Born in Beirut and celebrated on international runways, Acra has seamlessly woven Middle Eastern artistry into the fabric of global fashion. Her work exemplifies how creative industries operate as instruments of soft power — projecting identity, fostering exchange, and connecting cultures through design.

“At a time when cultural institutions are evolving and global dialogue is more essential than ever, Meridian is proud to honor leaders who demonstrate how heritage and creativity transcend borders,” said Deborah Lehr, Interim CEO of Meridian International Center. “Dr. Hawass and Reem Acra represent the best of cultural diplomacy — where artistry, history, and global engagement intersect.”

In previous years, Culturefix has honored an extraordinary roster of cultural and civic leaders, including Roger Goodell, Gloria Estefan, Denyce Graves, Anna Deavere Smith, Jenny Holzer, Hank Willis Thomas, among many others whose work spans sports, music, visual art, and public life. The 2026 celebration continues this tradition with the evening featuring tributes to the honorees, curated performances, and a program reflecting Washington’s dual identity as both a political and cultural capital.
