Supporting Increase in Domestic Resources Mobilization by Improving Tax Collection | A Project for Pakistan

On September 27, 2021, Meridian International Center and the U.S. Department of State virtually welcomed ten Pakistani tax professionals to meet and engage with their counterparts in the United States. This project focused on promoting the efficiency and effectiveness of Pakistan’s tax methods at the local and provincial levels, as well as exploring alternate technologies and enforcement mechanisms to bolster the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) and minimize foreign debt. Leaders from Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue and the State Bank of Pakistan joined high ranking officials from provincial tax offices to discuss a wide variety of these interests with American counterparts from across the tax industry sector.

The group started their virtual visit in Washington, D.C., before heading to various engagements in Cleveland, Ohio and Kansas City, Missouri. Throughout their virtual program, participants had the opportunity to establish connections with American experts at federal and state tax agencies, government auditing offices, and private tax software and advisory groups.

In Washington, D.C., participants met with experts from the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Internal Revenue Service, where they reviewed the U.S. approach to tax collection at the federal level and discussed strategies to strengthen collaboration between the national and provincial fiscal agencies of Pakistan. In Cleveland, the group met with the Ohio State Auditor’s office and the Regional Income Tax Agency of Ohio to review local perspectives on taxation and means of enforcement. Concluding in Kansas City, the group met with the Missouri Department of Revenue as well as H&R Block to hear more about how advanced software can improve individual accountability and minimize fraud, waste, and corruption nationwide.
