SECURITY, CORPORATE ENGAGEMENT AS CENTRAL U.S. – PRIORITIES FOR AMBASSADOR LANDAU

On February 24, 2020, the Meridian Corporate Council partnered with Comcast/NBCU to host The Honorable Christopher Landau, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, for a discussion regarding the current state of U.S. – Mexico relations.

 

A former partner at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, Christopher Landau was sworn in as United States Ambassador to Mexico in August 2019. Ambassador Landau has extensive personal, professional and educational experience with diplomacy and Latin America; he was raised in the region by father Ambassador George Landau, who served as the United States Ambassador to Paraguay, Chile and Venezuela in the 1970s and 1980s.

 

In his remarks, Ambassador Landau expressed the honor he felt in serving in his current role, emphasizing the importance and complexity of the U.S. – Mexico relationship. He shared that, as Ambassador, he holds three central priorities: migration, security and commerce, and he expressed his deep commitment to serving the U.S. corporate leaders that are doing business in and with Mexico. In his briefing, he drew attention to the January 2020 signing of USMCA by President Trump as an important moment for Mexico’s economic growth, underlining that the economic success of Mexico should be considered a key U.S. interest in terms of both trade and security. Throughout the dialogue, Ambassador Landau reiterated his willingness to support U.S. corporations, drawing specific attention to the energy and pharmaceutical sectors. He connected the concerns of many businesses regarding uncertainty in regulations and standards with his key priorities, explaining that security is central to economic development.
