Each year, Meridian welcomes around 150 anglophone and francophone high school students and adult mentors from over 40 countries in Africa for a three-week U.S.-based cultural exchange and civic engagement training program.
Participants leave the program feeling inspired to implement projects in their home community–often citing their PAYLP experience as granting them the tools necessary to design successful projects.
As part of celebrating International Education Week 2024, Meridian is proud to highlight three 2023 PAYLP alumni and their incredible achievements over the past year.
Project: The National Student Council of Mauritius (NSC Mauritius)
Partners: Juan Didier, Mauritius, Youth – PAYLP Spring 2023
Goal: NSC Mauritius advocates for students from all backgrounds by empowering them to voice their concerns and shape their own educational experiences.
Impact: The Student Council regularly engages with its 270 members, providing multiple events and engagements throughout the year. The group recently partnered in August with the UNFCCC (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change), FXB Climate Advocates, Climate Solutions International, UNESCO Inclusive Policy Lab, and the Indian Ocean Commission to organize a local conference for youth on climate change. The conference brought together 115 youth and adult participants from 10 different countries, including the United States. NSC Mauritius has also organized a National Youth Summit with support of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports, and Recreation. Within the next couple of months, the group will hold a Robotics for Good Youth Challenge 2024-2025 in Mauritius in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union.
Advice for Future PAYLP Participants: If you want to achieve something, do your best everyday and make sure you are consistently working towards that goal.

Project: Climate Change Project
Goal: Climate Change Project seeks to decrease the presence of waste and deforestation in Tanzania.
Impact: Although the project is in its early stages, Elizabeth has already encouraged her students to initiate clean-up projects. In October, she and her students participated in “Save Lake Tanganyika” where they collected five tons of plastic bottles and other disposable waste. Elizabeth is grateful for the leadership skills that she honed during her PAYLP experience as she actively uses these skills through a service-learning approach in her project.
Advice for Future PAYLP Participants: Doing small things with love will bring changes for several generations.
Project: Eco Kelasi
Partners: PAYLP Summer 2023 Republic of the Congo cohort: Renée Joelle, Adult Mentor; Menisa, Youth; Jerôme, Youth; Grace Maria, Youth
Goal: Eco Kelasi aims to raise awareness among students about the use of garbage bins and the importance of maintaining a healthy school environment.
Impact: Over the course of the project, more than 850 students and nearly 100 teachers, administrators, and maintenance staff were impacted by the awareness and clean-up sessions. Students felt inspired to clean their own classrooms, and the project team has received requests to distribute additional maintenance equipment, thus demonstrating the success of the project.
Advice for Future PAYLP Participants: Be yourself, put your all into everything you do. Have confidence in yourself.
Laura and her team received a PAYLP 2023 Mini-Grant to implement Eco Kelasi.
