This exhibition chronicled the significant changes taking place in China as it has experienced rapid urban growth and the impact of globalization.
Chinese artists are keen observers of the transformations occurring in their urban landscapes. As with city-dwellers worldwide, metropolitan life impacts social relationships and daily existence. It also challenges people’s emotions. Some artists in this exhibition reacted by depicting objective realities, while others focused on fanciful or satirical impressions that mirror everyday experiences. Metropolis Now! was inspired by a desire to provide Americans with a sense of today’s China through the medium of art.
Meridian collaborated with the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC) to identify the artworks included in this exhibition. Major sponsorship was provided by Chevron, The Coca-Cola Company, Beyond Art Space, National Journal, McLarty Associates, Hon. Julia Chang Bloch and Mr. Stuart Marshall Bloch, Hon. and Mrs. Leo Daly III, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Ferguson, Mr. Stephen Lesser, Ms. Li Jing, and Mr. and Mrs. Michael Sonnenreich.
