On Thursday, January 31, 2013, Meridian International Center’s American- Chinese Cultural Initiative joined with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to host the 3rd Annual Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration.
In celebration of the Year of the Snake, Meridian and the Chinese Embassy organized a dynamic cultural evening, which began with the formal opening of Style in Silk: Tradition and Innovation in Chinese Fashion. This unique exhibition of silk art and fashion celebrates China’s time-honored tradition and features 62 silk costumes, paintings, and textiles. Curated by Meridian and the China National Silk Museum in Hangzhou, China, with support from the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, this exhibit marks the first time American audiences can see materials from the textile study collection at the world’s largest silk museum.
Guests at the celebration enjoyed a premiere viewing of traditional silk objects, as well as contemporary silk clothing by world-renowned designers, such as NE∙TIGER, Qi Gang, Qiu Haisuo, and Wu Haiyan. They also listened to traditional Chinese instrumental music, watched a kung-fu display, and sampled authentic Chinese cuisine prepared by chefs from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. The highpoint of the evening was a fashion show, in which models of the T∙H∙E Artist Agency, displayed the styles designed by celebrity Chinese fashion designers.
