Elections and the Media

  • Examine the principles of American journalism, the significance of a free and independent press, and the rights and responsibilities of journalists in a democracy;
  • Explore the strategic use of the media in presidential elections;
  • Look at the interrelationship between conventional news media (such as TV and newspapers) and Internet/social media;
  • Explore the significance of citizen participation in the democratic process:
  • Study the ethical and professional issues associated with investigative, political, foreign affairs and social issues reporting; and
  • Review the standards of journalism, operational practices and the role of other groups that help ensure accurate and unbiased election coverage in the U.S. and reporting results post-election.
