Combatting Plastic Pollution

International visitors at the Space Needle in Seattle, WA.

As the world confronts the growing plastic pollution crisis, the March 2022 UN announcement of a global plastics treaty has galvanized international action. Consequently, the United States has intensified efforts to address the plastic pollution crisis through a multistakeholder approach. As outlined in 22 STATE 128812 (“Communicating the U.S. Approach to Combatting Plastic Pollution”), the United States stresses that success requires collaboration across governments, the private sector, civil society, and local communities. The Combatting Plastic Pollution IVLP project highlighted innovative U.S. efforts in alternatives to plastics, best practices, and collaboration between France and the United States on research, development, and policy.

Participants gained insights through meetings with organizations like The Ocean Foundation in DC and The Fresh Water Collaborative of Wisconsin and the Water Council in Wisconsin. In Seattle, Fortuna Cools showcased a partnership with a Philippine NGO to promote eco-friendly packaging. French leaders shared innovative ideas with 40 students in a webinar arranged by the World Affairs Council of Seattle. In Oregon, the group explored the state’s Extended Producer Responsibility program, which holds producers accountable for achieving higher environmental standards in product design. In Florida, they discussed effective campaigns and programs in Miami-Dade County – including the 305 Plastic Free Initiative, Debris Free Oceans, Ocean Conservancy, and Big Blue and You – with a focus on shifting consumer culture towards a circular economy. They also explored the intersection of art, science, and environmental advocacy at a Miami gallery.

Inspired by these experiences, participants returned home eager to develop new strategies to combat plastic pollution, promote sustainability, and advocate for a cleaner environment.
