Combating Gender Based Violence

Participants had a chance to meet with the Finding Our Voices nonprofit in Camden, Maine.
This project focused on transformative strategies to combat domestic abuse and violence in the U.S., exploring how civil society, government, and law enforcement can collaborate to protect survivors and hold perpetrators accountable. Participants engaged with NGOs, faith-based organizations, legal service providers, and government agencies, gaining valuable insights into multi-sector approaches that raise awareness, educate communities, and empower victims. From advocacy programs that engage men and boys in preventing abuse to legal frameworks designed to support and protect women and children, this project illuminated the critical work being done to address domestic violence and foster safer, more equitable communities.

Project Objectives

  • Examine various social service agencies involved in the prevention, treatment, and assistance to victims of domestic abuse/violence;
  • Review domestic violence treatment programs from intake to reintegration in the community;
  • Demonstrate public/private partnerships and cooperative efforts that aim to improve community welfare and prevent domestic abuse; and
  • Increase familiarity with various types of public advocacy campaigns.

Impact and Next Steps

Before their visit, the participants had a limited view of how civil society could be involved in addressing issues like gender-based violence. Their interactions with various NGOs and community organizations were eye-opening, revealing a vibrant and active civil society that plays a crucial role in advocating for and implementing programs to combat gender-based violence. They were particularly appreciative of the opportunity to meet with and learn more about the unique experiences of Native American communities, to see accessibility in action, and the kindness and empathy of Americans to Palestinians.
