Whistleblowing is a popular ethical endeavor for raising concerns about wrongdoing in the public sector worldwide. Bangladesh adopted the Whistleblower Protection Act-2011 for the legal protection of the whistleblowers, but there has been little development of the act since its implementation.
The project’s goal was to develop awareness among university students about whistleblowing around malpractices in the public sector, increasing knowledge about bringing transparency and reducing corruption. The project consisted of several intensive workshops for 80 students interested in pursuing careers in public service and majoring in political science, governance, international relations, economics, business and other related subjects. Participants were from Jahangirnagar University, Barisal University, Noakhali Science and Technology University and Gopalganj University. During the workshop, the students expressed their understanding and mentioned some of the key challenges to whistleblowing in Bangladesh, such as fear, the Digital Security Act, political elite influence, and so on. Through social media and other news outlets, it is believed that more than 10,000 people knew about the project.
Dr. Nurul participated in the IVLP Project Transparency and Accountability in Government, organized by the U.S. Department of State and Meridian International Center, in partnership with World Affairs Council – World Affairs Council – Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky & Northern Kentucky, International Visitors Council, Inc. and Charleston Council for International Visitors.
