Kennedy Ouma is a development communication expert specializing in climate change and agriculture, with a focus on promoting good agricultural practices (GAP) and agribusiness as a sustainable income source in low-income communities, particularly in Kenya. As the climate change communication advisor at GIZ Kenya, he leverages strategic communication to drive climate action and agricultural development. Previously, he led development communication efforts at the Kenya Climate Innovation Centre, supporting agribusiness SMEs, and worked with Standard Media Group’s FarmKenya Initiative to educate farmers and address food security. His previous experience also includes serving as Communications Officer at Egerton University, where he co-founded CoELIB Media, and he also initiated the Green Revolution Program, which supports youth and women in agribusiness. Kennedy holds a bachelor's degree in Agribusiness Management, a postgraduate diploma in Multimedia, Public Relations, and Corporate Communications, and is pursuing a master’s degree in Development Communication.
This community-based program promoted agribusiness as an alternative economic activity among the youth in Kobala, Homa Bay County, Kenya. The program was developed to solve the unemployment crisis in the region that has caused youth to resort to crime for their daily survival. As a result of the program, 200 adolescents were introduced to careers in farming, educated about agricultural best practices, and trained in farming techniques. A demonstration plot was set up, and support was provided to a group of 20 young adults starting their own farms.
Kennedy participated in the IVLP Project U.S Agriculture Trade and Food Safety, organized by the U.S. Department of State and Meridian International Center.
Kennedy's exchange experience led to the development of his IVLP Impact Award Project: "IVLP was an eye opener and enabled me to see the world as a village full of innovative opportunities that I can harness through networking sessions with other IVLP alumni."
