Dr. Tilen Gorenšek works at Slovenia’s Ministry of Digital Transformation, where he subsidizes the development of basic and advanced digital competences of youth, the working population and the elderly, and engages in activism for cyber-related topics and against disinformation. Tilen previously served as the Director of an NGO focused on digitalization of society, with a special emphasis on cybersecurity. He has extensive experience connecting with leaders in government agencies, local level institutions, the private sector, civil society organizations, media and academia to deal with policies on digitalization of society in a holistic manner.
The project revolutionized online cybersecurity education for youth by providing engaging and effective lessons targeted at primary school students. The YUNO learning method, which prioritizes mindful learning, personal connection, and cognitive compatibility, provided the framework for these cybersecurity lessons. Overall, this project enhanced cyber safety awareness and literacy among children, parents, and educators through engaging, interactive content on a free virtual platform.
The interactive lessons and quiz promoted active learning and reached over 19,000 children, with significant engagement from parents and educators, especially in rural Slovenia. Children who participated in the quiz often discussed digital safety with their parents, leading to a broader household awareness of cybersecurity. Over 400 pieces of feedback highlighted the content’s effectiveness in bridging generational understanding. Additionally, schoolteachers integrated the content into their curriculum, promoting cybersecurity awareness among students and requesting follow-up sessions on specific cybersecurity topics.
Tilen participated in the IVLP Project: Promoting Cybersecurity II organized by the U.S. Department of State and Meridian International Center, in partnership with WorldBoston, World Affairs Council of New Hampshire, Columbia Council for Internationals, and Utah Global Diplomacy.
Tilen’s exchange experience led to the development of his project: “My IVLP journey…ignited the spark for my IVLP Impact Award project. From the corridors of power to the innovation hubs, each city provided invaluable insights and perspectives on cybersecurity. Inspired by these experiences, my project aims to blend the wisdom gained with the innovative YUNO teaching method, creating engaging and effective cybersecurity education materials.”
