Alheri Magaji is a co-founder and director of humanitarian aid at Resilient Aid & Dialogue Initiative, a non-governmental organization based in Nigeria. The organization works directly with vulnerable people, especially youth and women, to assist their growth and development as contributing members of the community. From medical outreach to other grassroot-level assistance, the organization has reached out to and supported thousands of people.
As part of this project, 30 families from the villages of Rimau, Kasuwan Magani, and Mararaban Kajuru in Nigeria received training on advanced farming techniques and agricultural finance tips. The project focused on displaced families with little to no formal education and used agriculture training as a means of empowering participants. Families who are internally displaced, widows and orphans were the target recipients. By empowering the selected families, the participants gained the skill to seek agriculture as a source of income. The success of the project has prompted other communities to reach out to Alheri to implement the program with their local governments.
Alheri participated in the Human Rights and Civic Engagement for Youth, organized by the U.S. Department of State and World Learning in partnership with the Charleston Council for International Visitors, Columbia Council for Internationals and Georgia Council for International Visitors.
Alheri's exchange experience led to the development of her IVLP Impact Award Project: "The IVLP program has shown me that anyone can want positive change, but not everyone has the passion, strength and courage. I have been encouraged to be one of those that don’t just want positive change but will also DO something about it."
