Radiofrequency spectrum is the foundation of the digital economy, supporting every wireless service, from mobile broadband and satellite internet to GPS, through internationally coordinated allocations governed by the Radio Regulations. In 2027, the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-27) will convene in Shanghai, China, to review and revise this binding international treaty governing the global use of radiofrequency spectrum and satellite orbits.
WRC-27 carries high stakes for satellite technologies, with agenda items addressing expanded satellite spectrum, modernized rules for non-geostationary and geostationary satellite systems, and new allocations for gateway Earth stations that will shape the reach and pace of next-generation satellite broadband across the hemisphere.
This breakfast briefing will equip economic and commercial officers and other diplomats responsible for telecommunications policy to understand these critical issues, communicate effectively with their home capitals, strengthen regional coordination, and advance their countries’ national interests.
