The marvels of social media and technology have empowered us to connect, share information and engage in global commerce like never before. But the unintended and real-world consequences of this technological revolution are also launching an assault on democracy, as the spread of misinformation and hate speech, as well as multiple mass privacy violations, undermine truth and trust. In this session, “Which Side of History?: How Technology is Reshaping Democracy and Our Lives,” author and CEO of Common Sense, Jim Steyer, will join book contributor and New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman to discuss Friedman’s essay, in which he postulates that no one seems to be in charge of our interconnected world. Tech Ambassador for Denmark Anne Marie Engtoft Larsen and moderators former Congressman John Delaney and Common Sense Washington Director April McClain-Delaney will join the conversation around the role of the tech industry in assuming more civic leadership for the consequences of their platforms and the role of governments globally in filling this leadership void.
