Malaysia is a significant regional and global partner for the U.S. Its border waters are particularly critical for neighbors like China, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, all of which rely on the Strait of Malacca, which connects the South China Sea and, by extension, the Pacific Ocean with the Indian Ocean.
As a pivotal player in the Indo-Pacific, the United States and Malaysia elevated the bilateral relationship to a comprehensive partnership in April 2014. Malaysia is the United States’ 19th largest trading partner and the second-largest trading partner among the 10 ASEAN members in Southeast Asia. The two countries share a diverse and expanding partnership in trade, investment, security, and environmental cooperation which we hope to delve into with the assistance of Ambassador Nazri.
