After many years meeting in private homes and rented halls, New England Hindus purchased property, hired a temple architect, and began construction of the area’s first Hindu temple. In 1990, they celebrated the consecration, or kumbhabhishekam. Since most of the congregation came to the United States in search of prosperity and happiness, an elected committee dedicated the temple to Lakshmi, the Goddess of Prosperity.
