Mar Thoma communities in the United States were initially small, but have grown over the years. The Detroit Mar Thoma Church began with fifteen families in 1975 and now has over 200. Massachusetts members join a procession for the feast of St. Thomas, which includes chenda melam, the beating of Kerala drums, to celebrate the arrival of the apostle on the Malabar Coast in 52 CE.
