The site currently receives approximately 70,000 visitors each year, but has the capacity to host even more. This process would be aided by infrastructure improvements such as better information, attractions and services.
Earthquakes may have been a key factor in the decline of Chavín. Landslides and flooding, also a long-standing threat, continue to menace what remains of the site. Many of the major buildings are unstable and the once-efficient drainage system no longer functions.
The Chavín Ceramic program began with seed funds from GHF in 2008. This initiative aims to support 30 young people trained in the manufacture of traditional handicrafts and reproductions of ancient pottery. It includes training and job creation that can result in additional revenue for the community.
