In May 1973, the United States and China established a U.S. Liaison Office in Beijing and an equivalent PRC office in Washington, D.C., respectively. George H. W. Bush was appointed by President Gerald R. Ford to serve as chief U.S. liaison officer from 1974 to 1975. Bush’s fourteen-month assignment was considered highly successful for U.S.-China relations.
