In February 1972, President Richard Nixon visited leaders of the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing, becoming the first leader of a country without diplomatic ties with China to do so. Nixon’s visit – which he referred to as “the week that changed the world” – was arranged by National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger and marked the end of over 20 years of separation between the United States and China.
