Agnes Smedley was an American journalist, author, and communist sympathizer. As a foreign correspondent for the Frankfurter Zeitung and the Manchester Guardian, Smedley reported on the Chinese Civil War and traveled throughout the country with the Eighth Route and the New Fourth Armies, during which she met and befriended several Chinese officials and war leaders.
