In 1927, Coca-Cola products first appeared in China, where they became immensely popular. The beverage’s current translation, registered in 1928, replaced local shopkeepers’ attempts to sound out “Coca-Cola” with Chinese characters. Their meanings, however, sometimes translated poorly. While the company ceased sales in China in 1949, Coca-Cola returned to China with a shipment of its iconic drink in January 1979.
