In 1917, Sidney Gamble, who was working with Princeton-in-Peking and the YMCA, joined his friend, John Stewart Burgess, to conduct socioeconomic surveys in China. Between 1908 and 1932, Gamble traveled four times to China. He took over 5,000 photographs, conducted hundreds of surveys, and was regarded as an expert on Chinese society.
