Frank N. Meyer conducted four botanical expeditions in China for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Walking thousands of miles with help from his trusted guide and interpreter, Ting Chowhai, Meyer identified ornamental plants, as well as fruits resistant to disease and drought. Meyer greatly admired the Chinese people, saying, “In agriculture, they are experts.” The Meyer lemon was one of many species he brought to the United States and was later named in his honor.
