Yung Wing, a native of Guangdong Province, was the first Chinese student to graduate from an American university, Yale College, in 1854. He was deeply tied to the United States – marrying an American and implementing the Chinese Educational Mission in 1872. A Qing government-sponsored program that provided Chinese boys with a U.S. education, Wing’s mission also provided the 120 students with an immersive experience that included homestays with local families.
