Nelson Trusler Johnson served as ambassador to China from 1935 to 1941, during which he was presented with this scroll depicting Beijing and its outskirts, everyday Chinese life, and Johnson’s Ford automobile flying an American flag. An inscription was added to the work in 1939 by Hu Shi, then Chinese ambassador to the United States, commending Mrs. Johnson for preserving the scroll in her collection.
