In 1877, former president Ulysses S. Grant embarked on a world tour. Beginning his visit to China in Hong Kong, Grant also traveled to Beijing, Canton, Shanghai, and Tianjin. He met with Prince Gong as well as with Viceroy Li Hongzhang, who, twenty years later, paid his respects at President Grant’s tomb in New York during his tour of the United States.
