After being discharged from the U.S. Navy at the end of the American Civil War, Lucius Waterman re-enlisted in 1866 for another three years. During that time, he traveled to Hong Kong, and his ship joined the Asiatic Squadron in 1867. Waterman was also an artist who built miniature ship models and sketched images of his travels, including this one of the China steamer.
