When Augustine Heard established his company in 1840 with friends Joseph Coolidge and George Basil Dixwell, the business grew rapidly. A year later, Heard invited to China his eldest nephew, who was later followed by his three brothers. In 1857, the firm relocated its headquarters from Canton to Hong Kong and eventually expanded its operation, opening offices in Fuzhou, Ningbo, Shanghai, and Amoy (Xiamen).
