As China’s foreign trade expanded beyond Canton, additional ports opened along the coast and major rivers, including the Yangtze (Chang Jiang). Full-masted American vessels, such as the Mary Whitridge, were gradually replaced in favor of faster, lighter steamships that could sail closer to land and move quickly upriver against strong currents.
