Robert Rauschenberg, an American artist who anticipated the pop-art movement, visited China in 1982. At a 1,500-year-old Xuan paper mill, Rauschenberg collaborated with traditional Chinese papermakers to create his 7 Characters series. This collaborative spirit inspired Rauschenberg to start the Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange (ROCI). ROCI exhibitions toured internationally, including to China, and Rauschenberg is still credited for inspiring an entire generation of Chinese artists to incorporate modern art into their own work.
