McDonald’s first entered China in 1990 with its Shenzhen, Guangdong, location. The city was declared a special economic zone in 1979 and was one of the first to open to foreign businesses. The Beijing location was the world’s largest McDonald’s when it opened in 1992, with almost 1,000 employees working on a line of 29 cash registers to serve 40,000 customers on its first day. That’s a lot of fries!
