The Mogao Caves in Gansu contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art in the world, but for many Americans the caves are too far to visit in person. Thanks to Chinese experts who are creating digital maps of the entire cave system, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C., displayed Pure Land: Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang to virtually transport Americans to the grottoes. Donning 3-D glasses, visitors explored the caves’ thousands of sculptures and paintings detailing the history and cultural significance of the ancient silk roads. The exhibition was conceived and designed by the Applied Laboratory for Interactive Visualization and Embodiment (ALiVE), City University of Hong Kong.
