President Donald Trump’s state visit in 2017 marked the first time in modern China’s history that any foreign leader attended an official dinner in the Forbidden City. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump also had tea in the Bao Yun Lou, a building originally constructed in 1915 with funds from President Theodore Roosevelt to store significant Chinese artifacts. During his visit, President Trump showed President Xi a video of his granddaughter showing off her Mandarin-speaking skills. After watching the clip, President Xi reportedly said she deserved “an A-plus” for her singing and Mandarin.
