When given the opportunity in 1974 to serve as an ambassador anywhere in the world, future president George H.W. Bush chose to head the liaison office in Beijing. His high regard of U.S.-China relations later influenced his presidency, when his personal ties with the country helped him to navigate international politics during his term. The current U.S. Ambassador to China still lives in the same house near Ritan Park that President Bush and his wife Barbara shared more than 40 years ago.
