President Ronald Reagan was the first U.S. president to visit China after the two nations re-established relations in 1979. His six-day state visit was very high profile: around 600 journalists accompanied the president during his trip. President Reagan spoke of the need for “mutual respect and mutual benefit” between the two countries and made it a goal of his trip to improve diplomatic relations.
