The number of agents who facilitated transactions between American and Indian merchants at ports in India increased as trade with the United States expanded. Hailing from a prominent Parsi family, Nusserwanjee Maneckjee Wadia was the leading agent for U.S. trade in Bombay. Wadia’s ability to create business relationships – often based on friendships – with international clients contributed to his financial success.
