Established in 1961, the Peace Corps is a volunteer program in which Americans serve two-year placements with local governments, schools, and NGOs overseas. Since its inception, more than 200,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 141 countries in a variety of fields. Like many Peace Corps alumni, Michael Williams, who taught English in the Republic of Korea, has been a professor in Japan since 1982. In Malaysia, Peter Becker and Marina Wong operated a research substation south of Kuala Lumpur. Their studies, which were later published in scientific journals, were supported by the Forest Research Institute (Kepong) of Malaysia.
