"Two American Icons" Art Exhibit Breaks New Ground in Malindi
From September 29 to October 8, PAS organized a highly successful exhibition, Two American Icons: Jacob Lawrence and Lois Mailou Jones at the Malindi Museum in coastal Kenya. This was the first major cultural event organized by any foreign embassy in Malindi, which is a growing tourist destination on Kenyas primarily Muslim Indian Ocean coast. Around 150 of Malindis senior government officials, academics, journalists, artists, students, and arts and culture figures enjoyed an evening of American art and culture at the exhibition opening on September 29. The six resident Americans in Malindi, including a Peace Corps volunteer, also attended. Following speeches by the Chairman of the Malindi Museum Society, the Curator of the Malindi Museum and other local officials, the CAO made welcoming remarks. The program ended with an address by the Guest of Honor, Sukyan Hassan, the Kadhi of Malindi (the leading Muslim religious figure in the town). The Kadhi and the CAO officially opened the exhibition which attracted a number of local residents and tourists during its run in Malindi.
PAS has received many compliments from visitors to the exhibition. The Curator of Malindi Museum in a letter to the CAO wrote: "The exhibition was of great interest to the people of Malindi and played a great role in the promotion of mutual understanding and cultural exchange between Kenya and the United States of America." The positive impact of mounting this exhibition in a new museum (opened in 2004) in a marginalized region of Kenya far outweighed the logistical hassles involved. The program proved a very effective tool in post's Muslim outreach efforts.
